About Mr. Chen
Jonathan Chen has taught string orchestra in K-12 schools since 2015. He has experience teaching elementary strings, middle school orchestra, high school orchestra, and after school honor ensembles. He was previously the Secondary Director of Orchestras in the Rowland Unified School District and has helped them grow their orchestra program by introducing new ideas and creating a close-knit community.
He is currently the orchestra director at Aliso Niguel High School and oversees 134 students in the program. There are currently four orchestras, which include two string orchestras and two chamber orchestras. The orchestra program provides opportunities for students to perform in the SOKA University Performing Arts Center, Renee & Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, and attend multiple field trips throughout the school year.
Mr. Chen’s teaching philosophy has always centered on building strong relationships with his students. He has worked hard to drive a culture of respect, inclusivity, and excellence. His teaching method and curriculum focuses on working with staff members, administrators, and parents to provide each student the best music experience. He encourages his students to give feedback and participate in meaningful ways. Orchestra is a place where they can meet new friends, create core memories, grow as leaders, make music as part of a larger group and just be themselves in a safe environment.
He resides in Tustin with his wife Patty and their daughter Belle. When he isn’t spending time with his family or helping grow the orchestra program, you’ll find him at home reading webtoons or manga, playing video games, or exercising!
